V.Vijaya lakhmi
Age : 25 years

After gaining seven years of experience in bags stitching, I took training at SRT Rural Institute in January 2002 under a scheme of Andhra Pradesh Rural Livelihoods Project. From the time I joined the course I started taking interest in designing bags, which are not only stylish but also cater to a cross section of women.

In order to cater to the variegated needs of the people, I have come up with different styles for different age groupsthe variety has provided me with ready market. Today I have five varieties of handbags, five of shopping bags, five of travel bags, three each of school/college bags, hand purses and two of kitty purse with felt or quilt. The fledging market provided me with an opportunity to market not only in Miryalguda, Suryapet, Kodad, Narketpally towns of Nalgonda Distirct but also provided market avenues throughout the country namely Delhi, Mumbai, Culcutta, Ahmedabad, Sholapur, Pune Chennai, Vizag, Coimbatore and Erode. Thanks to the growing market, I have a monthly turnover of Rs.3, 00,000 and I produce as much as 100 bags everyday and over 100 workers from the same village work for me today. I owe this to my training at SRT Rural Institute, which enabled me to take up the task with confidence. Recently, I have appointed two supervisors, who have also been trained by SRT Rural Institute with Rs.4000 monthly salary, I want to see this grow so that I turn it around and capture market for the bags. Therefore, I am now concentrating on the design and production of more bags to cater to the market needs.

After passing my 10th grade examination, in the year 2000, I joined the course of " electrician" training at SRT Rural Institute. As soon as I finished my 10th class I had a feeling that I am wasting my time and I realized that I should make some productive use of time, the best route I thought was to take up some skill-based training. That's how I got in touch with SRT Institute and joined the course of electrician-the training provided by SRT gave a real fillip to my confidence. I liked the training and learned a lot from my stint at SRT.Immediately, after I finished my training I established a service center and took up sales and service of fans, grinders and motor winding. On one occasion I have had the opportunity to visit Balanagar, the industrial belt skirting Hyderabad city, where I studied how to handle sale of fans on a commercial basis. This visit helped me to understand the size of the market and explore newer areas of sales and service. With the training at SRT, I got the confidence and thought I should be on my own. From the word go-there was no looking back. Today, I have a simple strategy of assembling fans on a monthly installment basis. This really caught up the imagination of the rural people, who are buying fans from me. Thanks to their support, I am doing very well in business to lead a cozy and a decent life.

I have joined the course of electrician at SRT Rural Institute and have gained immensely from the course; I was part of my brother's electrical workshop, which gave me the initial exposure to the business of electrical appliances.

I was greatly impressed by the scientific teaching methods and the practical aspects, which was documented so well that it taught us and motivated us to be on our own.

I am right now eking a decent livelihood through fans assembling, motor winding and grinders assembling and earn Rs.5000 every month.

I got trained in the 2nd batch of Radio, TV and Home Appliances repair. After getting my basic skills right I have also attended a skill-up gradation program jointly conducted by CAPART and SRT Rural Institute. After undergoing advance-training programme at the Institute, I garnered enough confidence. In fact, I wanted to establish my own service center, but had no money to start.

Therefore, initially I took up a job and got some hands-on experience. The urge to be on my own coupled with the confidence that I gained out of SRT Institute training made my dream possible. The confidence that I gained triggered the ambition of owning a repair center for TV and electronic goods. After dabbling with repair, today I am also assembling Television sets for the local market with two persons working for me full-time and two learners attached to me as apprentice. I am able to manage my business with by giving rents and electricity bills and above all eking a decent livelihood and yes, all this I attribute to the successful training at SRT.

We got trained at SRT Rural Institute on " machine embroidery and hand embroidery" and we were very happy as we got both theoretical and practical inputs along with course material.

The training component was very good, both of us had just basic qualification and yet we could understand the complexities of embroidery with ease. Pochampally-the place where we live is known for saree production, thanks to the growing market, embroidery on sarees is much sought after by the people. We have innovated on some of the designs and with the market in place we are able to beautifully sustain the life. Today, we have our hands full and are busy with embroidery on sarees.
